#39 (EN): IAA Transportation, VCU Tech-Video

Have a nice Sunday! The first snow is in the mountains, energy costs are exploding, we are in the middle of the "Cold War". A solution to get out of the fight for energy is the Sion with solar. Here is the summary of the last week on the way to the series.

+++ SAVE CO2 AT BOOTH CO2 +++

Sono uses a funny pun on Twitter to refer to its booth number at the IAA Transportation:

"Save CO2 - at booth C-02".

And one joke follows the next: on one of Sono's solar-powered trucks, the slogan "How Cool - I don't need fuel" can be found.

The booth already looks impressive, here are some pictures from Twitter:

And if you want to know why Sono is going to IAA Transportation, here's a blog post from Sono titled: "This year we're at IAA Transportation!". But why actually?"

+++ TECH-VIDEO VCU +++

A new video for all those who want to know where the Sion currently stands in development.

At CES (Continental Engineering Services), the SVC3 is being intensively tested, especially the software. The brain of the car is the "VCU", the Vehicle Control Unit. This is where the information from the control units comes together - and it then decides what needs to be done.

Osman is one of the test engineers who test the correct interaction of the CAN bus data streams - and is not afraid to sit in the prototypes and test this while driving.

Here, errors become directly visible and, in case of doubt, the VCU even has to cope with errors while driving. Not only throttle and brake, but also heating, cooling and charging are part of it. When the SVC3 gets the blessing from CES, it will go back to the departments, which are eagerly waiting to further optimize with the car and run their own test programs. The first car (SVC3.9) goes to the E/E team. Here's the video:

Side note: The air mattress at the beginning of the video is 1.80 m long and went in easily and there was still room. Sleeping will not be a problem.

+++ IAA TRANSPORTATION +++

Lars (Head of Product Sono) gave a keynote at the IAA on Thursday. The title of the talk is "Why solar is the next big thing in freight". For those interested in Sono's second pillar - licensing solar to third parties - here's a 15 minute summary.

https://www.nfz-messe.com/de/video/live-stream-iaa-2022-keynote-von-lars-loehle-head-product-sono-motors-3598.html

Sono Motors is presenting no fewer than four solar trailers in Hanover, for buses, e-transporters and refrigerated vehicles. The solar technology provides for seamless integration into a whole range of vehicle architectures - including curved surfaces, such as the rounded bus roof shoulders. Customized solar solutions have been implemented for Chereau, Köggel and MTTE (Mitsubishi) refrigerated trailers, meeting some of the trailer's power and cooling needs from renewable sources. Full-surface solar integration on the roof and sides of a 40-ton semi-trailer is expected to cover up to 50% of the average annual energy demand of the refrigeration unit.

+++ REGENERATIVE +++

Auto Motor Sport has made a very good video on various misconceptions about regenerative energies, electromobility and Bidi. From min. 29 onwards, it's Bidi's turn, and from min. 33 onwards, it's Sono with its special position around AC-Bidi:

+++ CARSHARING +++

Sono is cutting its commission on vehicle rentals from 20% to 10% by the end of the year.

+++ CLIMATE ACTION +++

It's 2022, and it's no longer enough for companies to rake in profits - they also have to give back to the community. Sono is still a long way from raking in the profits, and you currently have to look for them with a magnifying glass - but the dangers of climate change and the importance of taking action are being pointed out all the more strongly.

+++ LEFT AND RIGHT: ELLI BIDI +++

The competitors are not asleep. The advantages of AC BiDi charging, especially the affordable wallbox for at home, cannot be stressed often enough. And of course the advantages of the LFP battery in the Sion, which is particularly cycle resistant.

Due to the lithium-ion technology, the maximum bidi capability of a "conventional" vehicle battery is limited - "E-driver" already reports that in the prototypes, it's over after 4000 hours or 10,000 kWh.

VW/Elli is partnering with Belgium's Elia to develop "business models around bidirectional charging."

+++ FUN FACT +++

There is a first wallbox that supports AC-Bidi. The openWB Pro has implemented ISO15118-20 according to the current draft and is therefore Vehicle 2 Grid ready. The price: 2.099 €.

For comparison, the first DC-Bidi box with 10kW is currently available from EVTec, at a price of 13.000 €.

Small problem - there is still no car that can AC bidi - and regeneration is disabled, because the regulations are unclear. For the EVTec there is at least the Honda E which can do that.

In any case, there is movement in the market. Our high electricity prices come from the fact that gas-fired power plants are mainly used to generate electricity quickly and to smooth out peaks. They can be replaced by regenerative e-cars. We are on the right track.
