#19 (EN): Cantrail Redesign, Cyber Security, Sion Community

Have a nice Sunday! The week it was sunny in the north, and rainy in the south. Mixed weather, as in global politics and the stock market.

+++ SPRINT REPORT 14 +++

Last week there was a new sprint report from development - 63 pages thick. All points would go beyond the scope of this article, so here is only a small selection of the subjectively most important ones. As always, the link to the full text is at the end.

Highlights:

  • Cybersecurity alignments with experts took place. Vehicles are becoming more and more networked. Digital security is therefore becoming more and more important, in every phase of vehicle development.

  • New Sono Motors logo on charging lid integrated. The charging lid gets the new logo.

  • Roof cantrail redesign - done.

In progress

  • Deletion of the interior rear overhead lamp in review. The Interior department sees this as a highlight. From the customer's point of view, it is not so nice at first glance. It is being examined whether the rear overhead lamp can be omitted. Probably it saves costs, or it works with only one lamp. We do not know more about this either. In the past, I think the light was more important when the direction was still given from the back seat next to the toddler with the Big Shell Atlas. Today, so many electronic devices shine from the rear seats that no ceiling light can compete with them anyway.

  • Solar Body Panels not matching defined acceptance criteria - optimization in progress. The delivered solar panels have failed the Sonos quality control. Everyone who has made any product knows this. No lowlight, needs some work.

Lowlights

  • Ongoing lockdowns in China delay time plans in some squads (e.g. high voltage battery, infotainment, bidirectional) The China lockdown also affects Sono. BYD's battery, BIDI, and infotainment are waiting for parts.

Interesting are some headings that appear very rarely like: Recycling, Simulation, and Homologation. Basically, everything seems to be in the green. Exterior, Body Structure, Infotainment, Chassis, Thermal, E-E, Powertrain, Weight-Management, Virtual Vehicle, Design, and Crash & Safety also report no lowlights.

+++ FINANCIAL INJECTION +++

Sono offered 10,000,000 common shares and already sold out Tuesday evening at 22:30. All shares were offered by Sono Motors, so new shares. About $40 million gross landed in Sono's pot. About 1.5 million additional shares ("greenshoe") are probably not issued, which may or may not happen in the next 30 days, in which case up to another $6 million would be added, minus fees. There is still money missing, but Sono can at least refinance itself even in difficult times.

+++ TIMELINE +++

The timeline has currently disappeared from the Sono homepage, here it lives on. As part of the capital raise, the prospectus has also been updated again. The timeline in the SEC prospectus (p. 91) shows that the SVC3 is being built right now, "pre-series" (Generation IV) will be built in early 2023. Generation V will then be the series vehicle. The SOP timeline itself is unchanged.

+++ NEWSLETTER +++

On May 1st a newsletter arrived from Sono. 99% of it we already had covered here in the last weeks - what we didn't have yet were some facts about the sheet metal of the Sion. 2 mm sheet thickness, 1,000 tons of ram pressure, 150 tons of draw cushion pressure. Serious conversation starter knowledge - no one knows what it means, but everyone is amazed.

Laurin also has some photos of the body in white production on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/laurin-hahn-162680127_sev-activity-6928004806917648384-osXx

+++ LEFT AND RIGHT: MICROLINO +++

Microlino production in Turin is ready and running. Microlino is currently building the last pre-production vehicles before starting the production of the first production vehicles. Congratulations to the whole Microlino Italia team!

There was a real spat about the Microlino in the past: the contract manufacturer for the Microlino (Artega) had suddenly pulled a very similar in-house creation out of the hat - the Karolino. Showdown was at IAA 2019 when the Microlino was on display in Hall 4, and the Artega Karo in Hall 5. Microlino then allowed the building of the "Karo" after a dispute. Artega was now just acquired by ElectricBrands ("XBus") - who plans to launch the Karo(lino) next year. As it looks at the moment, Microlino is currently ahead.

+++ MDR +++

A new report about SEV on MDR (german television): Sono right at the beginning, with an interview of Jona and Laurin. Very nice, including BIDI. The report even includes the “Solartrabant”. MDR has to mention that and it is good. Only the Aptera is missing in the round SEV.

+++ DATES +++

Henrik Mitsch is head of Sono Digital at Sono Motors and gives a presentation at the Auto Summit in Hamburg on the topics of "Connected Car" - and in a breakout session "Rethinking Sustainable Mobility" It’s a face-to-face conference!

15:45 is a coffee break; participants can take the "Millerntour" through the stadium of the FC St. Pauli soccer club. At 16:00, the workshop resumes. Fifteen minutes for a stadium tour in Hamburg, or as they say in the Allianz Arena in Munich at FC Bayern - "I'll quickly take the elevator down from the VIP lounge and get the crab tongs out of the Bentley".

+++ RESERVATIONS +++

The last relatively early bird Sions are still listed at the old price of 28,500 Euros. Soon the reservation #18,500 will probably be reached. Then the Sion will cost 29,900 euros (incl. 19% German VAT).

+++ FUN FACT +++

There are several closed Facebook groups on Sono Motors. Administrators sometimes wonder about some weird requests to join from people north of London with no interest in EVs whatsoever. We finally figured out why some think we are a religious community here... All a big misunderstanding - thanks to Google!

WRONG: If you search for Sion Community, it takes you to the lovely UK: https://sioncommunity.org.uk/ - it's a Catholic community in North East London

CORRECT: If you're looking for Sono Community - because Sono is more than the Sion - then you're right if you've bypassed speakers (Sonos) and Sono itself. That's where you'll find the blog, the Facebook groups, and everything Sono.

Stay healthy!
